Captain Joshua John Ward is credited
with creating the Pawleys Island rope hammock, at Pawleys Island (South
Carolina, USA) in 1889. He was a river boat pilot who barged rice
and supplies between the nearby Georgetown and the rice plantations
of the South Carolina low country.
It is believed that he created the hammocks
after finding the traditional grass-filled mattresses on his boat
too hot in the summer. He wanted to make a cooler, more comfortable
cotton rope hammock for use on his river boat and after several unsuccessful
attempts created a hammock using wooden spreaders without knots.
